About Stanley Tollman
Stanley Tollman, The Travel Corporation's (TTC) founder and Chairman, was born on September 20th 1930, in the South African city of Johannesburg. He now lives in the London. Over the past 60 years, he has built his family's hotel and restaurant empire. His business career started rather humbly when he took over management of his parents' restaurant at the tender age of 19, a job for which he left university to do properly. Concurrently, his parents managed the Palace Hotel, owned by them.
Business Life Hotels have always had a prominent place in the Tollman family history, as Stanley Tollman and Beatrice Tollman first met inside a South African hotel named the Oyster Box Hotel, a hotel the couple later bought and turned into a successful hotel and restaurant. The Tollmans' first world-famous hotel was the Tollman Towers Hotel, the tallest and best South African hotel at the time. The towers were built in the center of the Johannesburg business district. TTC has been an international travel group for the last several decades. It owns more than two dozen world renowned travel brands that employ over 3,500 people and operate in more than 60 countries around the globe, such as Trafalgar Tours, Red Carnation Hotels, Lion World Tours, Contiki Holidays, AAT Kings, Uniworld, Creative Holidays, African Travel, Brendan Vacations and more. Stanley Tollman's ascent in the business arena has not come without hurdles. In 1973 he invested a significant sum in the Court Hotels establishment, and later, as interest rates increased steeply (rising from 6 to 20 percent) sizeable sums of money were lost. In an attempt to salvage the family business fortunes, the Tollmans moved to London with nothing but a share of ownership in a travel company. This travel company, now known as The Travel Corporation, has grown incrementally since the 1990's with every successful investment Stanley Tollman made in travel operations around the world. Although already over 80, TTC Chairman Stanley Tollman still remains active in the travel and tourism business, one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world today. Together with this has come a particular focus on the Chinese market, as outbound travel from China is predicted to increase considerably in the coming years. In a recent visit to Asia with his son and nephew, Stanley Tollman firmly expressed TTC’s commitment to the Asian market. Recently, Stanley Tollman decided to hand over the corporation's day-to-day management operations to his son and two nephews yet still maintain the position of TTC Chairman. Activism and Philanthropy Stanley Tollman is a generous philanthropist and an avid environmental activist whose most close-to-heart cause is the preservation of wildlife and plant life in South Africa. He has donated frequently to organizations and foundations working to preserve extinct animals, the cape leopard and the cape zebra, for example. Also reinforcing its commitment to environmental preservation, The Travel Corporation recently announced a partnership with environmentalist and explorer, Celine Costeau, who will collaborate with TTC on growing current foundation projects. A year back, Stanley Tollman celebrated his 80th birthday with his family and TTC employees in the TTC International Sales Conference that was held in Cape Town in October 2010. During the event Stanley Tollman made meaningful and sizeable donations to five local charities, including, the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, the Make A Difference Foundation (chaired by Francois Pienaar, the former flanker and captain for the South African Rugby Springbok team, who won the 1995 World Cup) and The Amy Biehl Foundation. Stanley Tollman has been a long-time supporter of the arts and through the years has helped advance African artists through the Tollman Family Art Award. |
